Interior Design Handbook: Dining Rooms

When envisioning their finished dining room, many homeowners imagine serving memorable meals during holidays, enjoying the laughter of friends and family, and perhaps indulging in a compliment or two about how beautiful the space is. Of course, setting the stage for all of those wonderful moments can be a bit challenging. From making the most of the size of your dining space to setting the mood with lighting, our team is excited to share some of our favorite ideas regarding interior design for dining rooms.

Custom Window Treatments

Modern window treatments do more than let in light or provide shade. Instead, they set the tone for the rest of your dining room décor.

For example, Heritance® Wood Shutters paired with custom draperies provide a timeless look that is perfect for formal dining rooms. The hardwood slats make the space warm and inviting, while the rich, custom fabrics of the drapes add a pop of drama. Combined, these dining room window treatments provide excellent light control and privacy and can even dampen outside noise for a peaceful dinner party.

If you prefer something more classic, add Luminette® Sheer Shades or Silhouette® Sheer Shades delivers an uncluttered appearance, unparalleled light control, and durability for homes that see more foot traffic. Want to step this look up a notch? Consider adding a window cornice for a crisp, structured finish or custom valances to soften the space without cramping the window.

For a more contemporary style, Banded Shades® or Designer Roller Shades® with stationary side panels are an excellent choice.

Proper Lighting

Nothing sets the tone for a birthday party, holiday dinner, or at-home date night than proper dining room lighting. Since many dining rooms are seen as the elegant hub of the house, we recommend lighting with a little drama. Chandeliers with dimmable bulbs, a unique Art Deco piece, or lighting with a modern geometric design add character to the space while adorning it in lighting that is as soft or bright as you wish.

Need something a little more casual? Pendant lightings, wall sconces, and sleek statement fixtures help keep the space relaxed while still setting it apart from the more casual rooms in your house.

Furniture That Fits the Space

Whether you’ve got a grand dining room that could hold 50 people or a cozy nook that’s perfect for your family, finding the right furniture pieces helps create a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere that people will love to gather in.

For large dining rooms, we suggest grand tables made of solid wood, expendable styles, or something with sculptural legs that uphold that grand, classic dining room feel. We recommend pairing this style of table with high-back chairs or a bench on one side for a balanced look that is still inviting.

For smaller dining rooms, consider round or drop-leaf tables, upholstered chairs, or even a built-in banquette to make the most of the space without cluttering. We also suggest keeping your materials and wall paint light to create the illusion of more space.
